MISSISSAUGA, ON - Marketing consultant Christ Morales has a passion for running. And for giving back to society. A Jamaican / Canadian, Morales was among the thousands who gathered at the Long Bay Beach Park in Negril in the early hours of December 5, 2009. In the light of bottle torches and to the sound of Reggae music, they awaited the starter’s orders for the ninth renewal of the Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K. Morales’ objective was not only to visit Jamaica for its beauty and warmth but primarily to challenge himself to successfully complete the Reggae Marathon in memory of his father who “passed away of complications brought on by his years long battle with diabetes.” He dedicated his run to raising money for Diabetes Research in Canada...the goal in 2009 was to raise $10,000. Morales battled +42 degree Celsius heat and humidity and finished in 5 hours and 25 minutes exhausted but happy. “We did it, we did it, we did it” were the only words he could manage as he crossed the finish line to be met by his wife and 'super supporter' Sally. “I am glad it is over but I didn't want it to end” he commented once he had emerged from a cooling dip in the Caribbean sea. The final of fund raising tally of $5,000 may not have hit the original goal, but each and every dollar raised went directly to the Canadian Diabetes Association to support research and education in Canada. “We are pleased with the result...we received tremendous support from friends and family, business associates and total strangers...thank you, thank you, thank you!” Morales noted that Strongbar Industries was a major contributor to the cause both in terms of support for the run and fund raising. “They were with me every step of the way. Always encouraging me to stay focused on the goals. Their financial support was also very, very generous. They 'walk the talk'”.
