October 1, 2009 ASIS International, is the preeminent organization for security professionals worldwide. The Accolades are a new awards competition that recognizes the security industry’s most innovative new products, services and/or solutions. A team of judges representing end users and experts in security technologies evaluated more than 130 entries before selecting the top 10 winners. The EW8310 Electromagnetic Lock was a winner in the “Coolest Stuff” category. This category is described as a security device that sets itself apart as a breakthrough or inventive as compared to similar products or techniques. This is something that not so long ago was yet to be imagined. The EW8310 is more than an Electromagnetic lock, it can also sense when an intruder is attempting to gain access into a building through a locked door. The patented built-in sensor detects attempted forced entry and activates local and remote alarms prior to the integrity of the door being compromised; well before the break-in has occurred. An alarm in the immediate location, similar to a car alarm, will ward off would be thieves before they have a chance to gain access. The remote alarm notifies security allowing them time to get to the break in area. Working with CPS Energy, the local electric utility, and Southwest Research Institute/TMAC (Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center), Southern Folger is the first manufacturer in the United States to complete the Lean, Clean & Energy Program.
The program involved lean manufacturing process analysis, environmental management systems practices and energy conservation techniques. The results will offer a potential energy savings of $85,000 and a reduced annual natural gas usage of 36,000 CCF. Additionally, an update of light fixtures not only improved aesthetics of the manufacturing facility, but also provided a 50% cost savings by using T-8 fluorescent high bay fixtures for an estimated $34,000 annual savings plus a $61,000 rebate from CPS Energy.

Aperio is a new technology developed to upgrade mechanical doors and wirelessly connect them to an existing electronic access control system, providing end-users with a simple, intelligent way to raise the security level of their premises at a lower cost than a traditional system.
Eric Beaudru of ASSA ABLOY says: "ASSA ABLOY's ambition is to offer flexible access control door locking and opening solutions. Aperio wireless technology has been designed with and for access control companies for effective and simple operation by security and IT managers. Thanks to great team work, Aperio escutcheons and cylinders are now cost effective extensions of Nedap AEOS, thus allowing for a greater number of doors to be controlled. It is a major breakthrough as the ASSA ABLOY expertise of the door environment is now available together with the most advanced access control technology to provide security, safety and convenience to all users."
Joffry Maltha of Nedap says: "So far, organisations were unable to benefit fully from everything electronic access control has to offer. Secure, low-cost and easy-to-manage RFID cards could only be used at doors wired to the electronic access control system. Access to all other doors was still dependent on traditional patented keys, which are hard to keep track of, particularly in larger organizations. With the Aperio integration in AEOS 2.3, Nedap presents a truly ‘all-round' access control system."
